Phillips played for the neighborhood team Wortley from 2003 to 2010, and at age 14 he enrolled in Leeds United’s academy. He advanced through the club’s development divisions and, in the summer of 2014, inked his first professional contract with the organization, locking him in for the 2014–15 campaign.

Phillips assumed leadership of the development and under-18 squads during the 2014–15 season. On January 4, 2015, Phillips traveled with the first team to Sunderland for the FA Cup third-round match. He did not play a part in the 1-0 loss.
