In the early 2000s, Musgraves self-released three solo albums and recorded an additional album with the duo Texas Two Bits. This marked the beginning of her musical career.

Musgraves has won three Academy of Country Music Awards, seven Country Music Association Awards, and seven Grammy Awards during her career.

Musgraves teamed up with emerging musician Noah Kahan on October 6, 2023, to re-release the song “She Calls Me Back” from Kahan’s album Stick Season.

Along with Reese Witherspoon, Musgraves executive produced My Kind of Country, a country music competition show, in 2023.

Alison Krauss is one of Musgraves’s career role models. She declared during a tribute performance to her favorite musician, John Prine, that “that man singlehandedly influenced me and my songwriting more than anyone else on this planet” and that “my favorite quality of John’s would be his sense of humor and it really influenced my songwriting.”

Lee Ann Womack is another person that Musgraves mentions as an influence from her early years: “I’ve always looked up to Lee Ann Womack because she’s from near where I grew up in East Texas.”

“If I could sing it like Lee Ann would and say it like John would, then I feel like I’ve gotten somewhere,” Musgraves said, referring to both Womack and Prine.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Country, Musgraves mentioned Ray Price, Julie Miller, Loretta Lynn, and records by Glen Campbell, Bobbie Gentry, Marty Robbins, Charley Pride, Roger Miller, and Jim Croce as influences for her sophomore album.

“Beauty, sex appeal, brains, wit, humor, beautiful songwriting, meaningful songwriting, no apologies for who she is, LGBTQ advocate long before it was even a thing or trendy or whatever,” Musgraves declared in a Billboard interview that she is a fan of Dolly Parton. She’s incredibly kind and brave, and I really love her spirit.

Musgraves has cited Cher, Selena, Ryan Adams, Cake, Neil Young, Weezer, Imogen Heap, Bee Gees, Sade, and Electric Light Orchestra as non-country music inspirations.
