In the early 2000s, Musgraves self-released three solo albums and recorded an additional album with the duo Texas Two Bits. This marked the beginning of her musical career.

She participated in the fifth season of the singing competition Nashville Star on the USA Network in 2007, placing seventh overall. She launched the successful single “Merry Go ‘Round” after signing with Mercury Nashville in 2012.
