American director, lyricist, producer and author, Jules Bass was born on January 19th 1953 in Philadelphia in the United States of America. He was born to Sid Richardson Bass and Anne Hendrickson Bass. He contracted scarlet fever when he was a teenager and came dangerously close to passing away. Before working for a marketing firm, he attended New York University.
In 1955, Bass began working with American Broadcasting Company art director Arthur Rankin Jr. When the two founded Videocraft International in 1960, they began by producing television ads before transitioning to television shows and films. The New Adventures of Pinocchio, their first syndicated television series, was released that same year. When they began making animated pictures for television, they changed the company’s name to Rankin/Bass Productions. The TV specials The Ballad of Smokey the Bear (1966) and The Wacky World of Mother Goose (1967), the stop-motion films Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) and Mad Monster Party (1967), and Frosty the Snowman (1969), which used traditional animation, came after.
For the aforementioned productions, Bass and Rankin shared the director’s credit. They then worked together on the popular animated series ThunderCats (1985–1989) and The Wind in the Willows (1987). Bass collaborated with composer Maury Laws to write the lyrics for several of the movies he directed. This started with the live-action/stop-motion film The Daydreamer, which he directed on his own for the first time (1966). The First Christmas: The Story of the First Christmas Snow, The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus, and the Emmy Award-nominated The Little Drummer Boy, Book II are just a few of the specials that Bass created for the firm under the pen name “Julian P. Gardner.” Fred Astaire, Danny Kaye, Mickey Rooney, Ed Wynn, Patty Duke, Ray Bolger, Shirley Booth, John Huston, Roddy McDowall, Danny Thomas, José Ferrer, Vincent Price, Phyllis Diller, Boris Karloff, and the Vienna Boys’ Choir were among the stars who sang songs he co-wrote with Laws. In addition, Bass turned a J. R. R. Tolkien stanza into musicalized lyrics for the 1977 release of The Hobbit, the first finished cinema version, with permission from the Tolkien estate. The animated film that was created for NBC won the Peabody Award. In 1987, Bass quit producing and directing movies. Later, he wrote a number of children’s novels featuring the Herb, the Vegetarian Dragon, and Cooking with Herb characters.
