Jonathan Bryan Toews was born on April 29, 1988, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Toews started playing organized hockey at the age of five, and by the age of 12, he was already playing in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
Toews attended Shattuck-Saint Mary’s, a prep school in Minnesota, where he continued to play hockey and develop his skills. After graduation, he attended the University of North Dakota, where he played for two seasons on the men’s hockey team before leaving to play professionally.
Jonathan Toews was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round, third overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in October 2007, and in his rookie season, he helped lead the Blackhawks to the Western Conference finals.
Toews continued to excel on the ice, and in the 2009-2010 season, he was named the captain of the Blackhawks at the age of 21, making him one of the youngest captains in NHL history. That season, he helped lead the team to its first Stanley Cup championship in 49 years, and he was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs.
Toews has continued to be a key player for the Blackhawks over the years, leading the team to two more Stanley Cup championships in 2013 and 2015. He has been named to the NHL All-Star team several times and has won numerous awards and honors, including the Mark Messier Leadership Award and the Frank J. Selke Trophy for his defensive play.
