Jonathan Slater is a British civil servant who from May 2016, has held the position of Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education until his sudden dismissal on August 26, 2020, following controversy over the results of the national high school exam.
Jonathan Slater entered the civil service in 2001, joining the Cabinet Office, after working for the London Borough of Islington. After four years there, he joined the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit in Policy Unit No. 10 in 2005, working on NHS reform and the Capacity Assessment program.
In 2006, he transferred to the Ministry of Justice, working in the National Crime Agency as Director of Implementation and Improvement, then in 2008 as Director of the Criminal Justice Reform Office. service, before being promoted in 2009 to Director General, Transformation.

In August 2020, the Prime Minister concluded that “a need for fresh official leadership” and Jonathan Slater announced that he would step down effective September 1. Jonathan Slater’s responsibility was providing policy advice to the Ministers on higher education matters and establishing the regulatory mechanism promulgated by the Office of Students. He regularly visits higher education institutions, including Sheffield Hallam University, as part of this activity.
As a senior civil servant, Jonathan Slater advised ministers from Britain’s three main political parties, at Number 10, the Cabinet Office, the Home Office, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Defense, before joining the DfE as permanent secretary in 2016.
Since leaving DfE, he has been a visiting professor at King’s College and Queen Mary’s College in London. He is also a Trustee of the Charter School Education Trust a Trustee of the Institute of Government and the Governor of Morley College.
