John McEnroe is the only male player in tennis history to hold the world No. 1 in singles and doubles. Only one other male tennis player, Stefan Edberg, reached first place in both cases, albeit at different times. John McEnroe ended his career with 77 ATP Tour singles and 77 doubles titles; this is still the highest combined score for men in the open period. He is the only male tennis player to have won over 70 titles in men’s singles and doubles.
He also won 25 singles titles on the ATP Champions Tour and has won 7 Grand Slam singles titles (4 at the US Open and 3 at Wimbledon), 9 Grand Slam titles in men’s doubles (5 at Wimbledon and 4 at the US Open) and a Grand Slam title in mixed doubles (at Roland Garros). Three of his year-end championship singles were at the Grand Prix Masters (ATP’s year-end event) and five at the World Tennis Championships (WCT) final, an event that ended in the year 1989. Since 2000, there has only been one men’s singles event at the end of the year, the ATP Finals (the new name for the Grand Prix Masters). He was named the ATP Player of the Year three times and the ITF World Champion: in 1981, 1983, and 1984.
John McEnroe contributed to five Davis Cup championships for the United States and later became the team’s captain. He is still active when he retires, often competing in high-level ATP Champions Tour tournaments. He also worked as a television commentator at major tournaments.
John McEnroe was born in Wiesbaden, West Germany (now Germany) to American parents, John Patrick McEnroe and his wife Kay Tresham. His father, the son of an Irish immigrant who was serving in the US Air Force at the time, revealed during a press conference in Belgium that his son “John was made in Belgium but born in Germany “.
