John Madden was a football player, coach, and sports commentator in the National Football League (NFL) (NFL).He led the Oakland Raiders to eight playoff appearances, seven division titles, seven AFL/AFC Championship Game appearances, and the franchise’s first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XI between 1969 and 1978.
Madden has the highest winning percentage of any NFL head coach who has coached 100 games, with no losing seasons.
After retiring from coaching, Madden worked as a color commentator for NFL telecasts from 1979 to 2008, earning him 16 Sports Emmy Awards.
Madden provided commentary for games broadcast on all four major American television networks, including CBS, Fox, ABC, and NBC.
On April 10, 1936, John Madden was born in Austin, Minnesota, and he happens to be the son of Earl Russell Madden (1905-1961) and Mary Madden (1917-2011).
When John was a child, his father, an auto mechanic, relocated the Madden family to Daly City, California, south of San Francisco.
In the year 1950, Madden graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Parochial School, graduating in 1950. He then enrolled at Jefferson High School where he graduated in 1954.
Madden, a high school football star, played one season at the College of San Mateo in 1954 before being offered a football scholarship to the University of Oregon, where he studied pre-law and played football with childhood friend John Robinson, however, he was not part of the squad due to a knee injury that made him undergo knee surgery.
He began working as an assistant coach at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California, in 1960, and two years later in 1962, he was then promoted to head coach. Madden went 12-6 in two seasons, including an 8-1 record in 1963 when his Bulldogs were ranked ninth in the nation among city colleges.
He was hired as a defensive assistant coach at San Diego State after the 1963 season and stayed there until 1966. The 1966 Aztecs were ranked among the top small colleges in the country during that final season.
Madden coached at San Diego State under Don Coryell, who Madden credits as an influence on his coaching.

It is unknown what killed John Madden, who died of unknown causes on December 28, 2021, at his home in Pleasanton, California.
Madden’s health had deteriorated to the point where he resigned as head coach of the Oakland Raiders, citing an increasingly deteriorating ulcer condition. He revealed his decision to resign by saying;
“I gave it everything I have and just don’t have anything left. I’m retiring from football coaching, and I’m never going to coach again in my life. This type of thing is easy to talk about, but it’s never easy to do.
I’m an Oakland Raider, I always will be an Oakland Raider, and I never respected people who moved from team to team. Loyalty has always been an important thing and trait of mine and it will continue to prevail.
To be honest, I don’t know what I’m going to do now, just take some time off. I have a wife and two children and I’m going to do what they want to do for a change. I’ve never done that before.”
