Brand obtained her Registered Mental Nurse certification at Brunel University after working as a nurse assistant in a residential facility for persons with learning difficulties, for Barnardo’s, and in a pub.

After that, she spent 10 years working as a psychiatric nurse in South London’s Bethlem Hospital, Swansea’s Cefn Coed Hospital, and South London’s Maudsley Hospital.

Brand went by the stage moniker “Sea Monster” when she first started her comedic career. In the middle of the 1980s, she worked in alternative comedy clubs in London and had her television debut on Saturday Live. She was a part of the British alternative comedy scene. She resided in a flat with the owner of a comedy club and fellow performer Ivor Dembina.

Early on, Brand’s delivery of jokes was monotone and bored, with pauses in between each phrase. It frequently referenced pop culture and the media, with numerous jokes joking about well-known people.

Brand participated at Channel 4’s Comedy Gala in 2010, a benefit concert conducted in support of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and live-streamed from London’s O2 Arena on March 30.

In the 2011 British live-action film Horrid Henry: The Movie, Brand portrayed the Demon Dinner Lady. She also contributed a voiceover to the 2011 pantomime Aladdin at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith.

Brand judged the first-ever Class Clowns competition at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August 2015, and she also declared the winner that evening at the Gilded Balloon.

The More You Ignore Me has a feature film adaptation written by Brand. She will appear in the movie as well.
