When Irsay’s father, Robert Irsay, traded the Los Angeles Rams for the Baltimore Colts when he was twelve years old. Carroll Rosenbloom, the Colts’ owner, had originally acquired the Los Angeles Rams.

He joined the professional staff of the Colts in 1982, following his graduation from SMU. 1984 saw the Colts move from Baltimore to Indianapolis, and a month later he was named vice president and general manager.

Jim took over day-to-day management in April 1996, taking on the positions of senior executive vice president, general manager, and chief operating officer following his father’s stroke in 1995.

After his father passed away in 1997, Jim and his stepmother got into a legal struggle over who should own the team. Eventually, Jim won, becoming the 37th youngest NFL franchise owner at the time.

The Colts have amassed a 258-191-1 regular season record since Jim took charge in 1995. The 258 victories are the fourth-most in the NFL during that span, per Pro Football Reference.

The squad has won 18 postseason games, 10 division crowns, two Super Bowl appearances, and Super Bowl XLI. From 2000 to 2009, Indianapolis won 115 games during the regular season, which is the second-most of any NFL team over that time.

Irsay joined the organization in 1984 and has worked with many coaches, players, and executives who have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

These individuals include Eric Dickerson (a member of the 1999 class), Marshall Faulk (2011), Bill Polian (2015), Tony Dungy (2016), Marvin Harrison (2016), Edgerrin James (2020), and Peyton Manning (2021).

Irsay was outspoken in 2009 in opposing the purchase of the St. Louis Rams by a consortium that included talk-show personality Rush Limbaugh. Irsay stated during a meeting of NFL owners.

“Our words do damage, and it’s something we don’t need when there are comments that have been made that are inappropriate, incendiary, and insensitive,” Limbaugh said in reference to remarks he made in 2003 about Donovan McNabb while working as an NFL analyst for ESPN. Irsay has given political support to Harry Reid and John Edwards.

During a National Football League owner’s meeting in October 2022, Irsay expressed his opinion “that there’s merit to remove Daniel Snyder as the owner of the Washington Commanders” in response to demands that Snyder sell the team.

When Irsay dismissed Colts head coach Frank Reich in November 2022 following a 3–5–1 start to the season and named former player Jeff Saturday the interim head coach in his place, there was criticism leveled at Irsay.

Before Saturday was hired, he worked as an NFL analyst for ESPN and had no coaching experience other than high school football.
