Jeļena Ostapenko Awards – Jeļena Ostapenko, born on June 8, 1997, is a Latvian professional tennis player.
She has reached career-high WTA rankings, achieving the world No. 5 spot in singles on March 19, 2018, and the world No. 7 position in doubles on September 12, 2022.
Jeļena Ostapenko made tennis history by winning the 2017 French Open singles title. She became the first player from Latvia to secure a Grand Slam singles tournament victory and the first unseeded player to triumph at the French Open since 1933. Apart from her successful singles career, she has also represented Latvia in the Fed Cup. She boasts seven singles and eight doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit and clinched the junior singles event at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships.
Born in Riga, Jeļena Ostapenko is the daughter of the former Ukrainian footballer Jevgēnijs Ostapenko (d. 2020) and Latvian-Russian tennis coach and former player Jeļena Jakovļeva. Her father played professional football for Metalurh Zaporizhzhia in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, where Jeļena’s grandmother resides. Jeļena has a half-brother named Maksim, who resides in the United States.
Her introduction to tennis occurred at the age of five, guided by her mother, and during her formative years, she looked up to Serena Williams as her tennis idol. At the age of five, she also began dancing and went on to compete in the National Latvian Championships for Ballroom Dancing. However, at the age of 12, she decided to focus solely on tennis, although she attributes her excellent coordination and skilled footwork to her years of dancing. Jeļena is multilingual and can communicate in Latvian, Russian, and English.
While her legal name is Jeļena, she is affectionately known as Aļona to her family and friends. Initially, when she was born, her parents wanted to name her Aļona, but this name was not listed on the Latvian name calendar, so she was named Jeļena after her mother.
It was later clarified by Latvian authorities that there were no restrictions preventing the registration of her preferred name, indicating a possible misunderstanding. While fans in Latvia and elsewhere always referred to her as Aļona, the Western world became familiar with this name only after her victory at Roland Garros in 2017. In her professional career, she uses her legal name to prevent any administrative confusion.
