Jay Park (Korean name: Park Jae-beom (born April 25, 1987) is a South Korean rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and entrepreneur. He is a member of the Seattle-based b-boy crew Art of Movement (AOM), as well as the creator and former CEO of the independent hip-hop record labels AOMG and H1ghr Music, as well as the founder of More Vision. Park went to South Korea in June 2010 to film Hype Nation, and in July secured a contract with SidusHQ, one of South Korea’s top talent agencies.
Who is Jay Park?
Jay Park, who was born in Edmonds, Washington, in the Seattle metropolitan region, developed an early interest in hip-hop music and breakdancing. Park went to Edmonds-Woodway High School, where he spent much of his break and lunch times dancing with friends.
Park began listening to hip-hop and rap music in his early teens and spent time in high school learning and writing rap himself. Park was one of the founding members of the Seattle-based b-boy crew Art of Movement (AOM) in 2003. Park, who frequently skipped classes to compete in b-boy events, would frequently clash with his mother about his lack of interest in academics and future higher education.
Park’s mother advised he try out for a locally advertised talent audition organised by South Korean company JYP Entertainment in 2004, after noticing that her son spent more time breakdancing than studying. With his family struggling financially at the time, Park auditioned for the program, assuming it to be a contest with a monetary award.
Unbeknownst to Park, the popularity of his audition would eventually lead to his being contacted and chosen by JYP Entertainment to be an idol in a Korean boy band. Park was brought to South Korea in January 2005 to get training in dancing, rapping, singing, and the Korean language under the tight supervision of JYPE.
