President Ali’s second child’s birth coincided with the Father’s Day occasion, and the whole country was delighted and congratulated the couple as they welcomed a healthy baby boy on Sunday.

Ilan is the first baby born to a sitting President and First Lady in Guyana. The world came forward to congratulate President Irfan Ali and the First Lady through social media. More than 12000 people flooded President Ali’s post with congratulatory messages while over 1.5k shared his post, and 22k liked it.

Irfaan Ali Biography

He was born on 25 April 1980 in Leonora, Guyana.

The child of two educators and one of two sonsAli also spent many of his formative years on the island of Leguan.

He attended the University of Guyana, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and a Master of Science degree in International Relations. He then went on to pursue a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of the West Indies.

Ali became a member of the National Assembly of Guyana in 2006. He was subsequently appointed to the portfolios of Minister of Housing and Water and Minister of Tourism Industry and Commerce.

During his tenure as Minister, Ali performed the functions of President and Prime Minister on separate occasions. In 2015, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) went into opposition during which time he served as chair of the Public Accounts Committee and co-chair of the Economic Services Committee of the Parliament of Guyana.

Ali began his political career in 2001 when he was elected to the National Assembly of Guyana. He served as Minister of Housing and Water from 2006 to 2011 and as Minister of Public Works from 2011 to 2015.

In 2015, he was appointed Minister of Public Infrastructure. In 2020, Ali was elected President of Guyana, defeating incumbent President David Granger. He is the first Muslim to be elected President of Guyana. 

He was selected as the presidential candidate for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic on January 19, 2019. His controversial selection came at a time after Ali had been charged with 19 counts of conspiracy and fraud by Guyana’s Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU). Immediately following his selection, Ali was accused of academic fraud.
