How to Use Windows Movie Maker As a Video Cutter

Windows Movie Maker is a great tool for working on videos and the best part is it’s free! Obviously you can’t compare it to advanced tools like Sony Vegas or Adobe Movie Maker but if you’re looking for some basic, more practical tools than just basic video editing then Windows Movie Maker won’t let you down.

We have previously discussed how you can quickly create movies from your photos using Movie Maker tool, and today I will tell you another unique idea you can use the movie maker tool: use it as a video cutter.

So let’s see how you can use Movie Maker as a video cutter to cut a clip from any video. You know that movie scene you’ve always wanted to play over and over, or that part of a speech in a talk. Is it better to separate them into a separate video file so that you can play and share them easily?

Before you begin, make sure that you have all the necessary video codecs installed on your system. If you don’t have them, then I recommend installing the K-Lite media codec before proceeding.

We go here.

Step 1: Start Windows Movie Maker and click Click here to Browse for videos and photos to browse and add the video you want to cut. You can also drag and drop your videos to add them.

Select folder

Step 2: Once you have added your video, wait for Movie Maker to analyze it. Once your video is analyzed, you’ll see its frame on the right-hand timeline.

Step 3: Now navigate to the specific frame of the video that you want as the starting point. You can use the video timeline or the preview player.

Step 4: Once the navigation bar is on the specific frame, right click on that frame and select the Set starting point option. Now repeat the same to set the End Point of the video from the context menu.

Step 5: Now preview your video to make sure that you have cropped it according to your need. Once you’re sure, save the video using the Save Movie option located in the main menu.

Save video

Wait for Movie Maker to render your video and save it to your hard disk. You can even upload videos to YouTube or send them to friends via email.
