Google products are great, but certain features are just hard to handle or completely distracting. For example, trending suggestions show up on your face whenever you want to search for something using the Google app. And if you’re annoyed and tired of it too, here’s how to turn off trending searches on Google App and browsers.
Aside from being very annoying, trending searches are often irrelevant. Obviously, not everyone wants to see what other people in their locality are looking for. And the fact that these recommendations aren’t personalized at all makes things worse. Time to get rid of them.
Note: Turning this off will also remove all previous trending searches. However, if you don’t delete your Google App History, it must be done separately if necessary.
How to get rid of trending searches in the Google app on iOS or Android
To turn off trending search on Android or iPhone, you need to drill down into the Settings panel. While the overall process is the same, certain user interface elements may differ depending on the device you are using.
Step 1: Launch the Google App and tap your profile icon.
Step 2: Click Install.
Step 3: Select General.
Step 4: Next, turn off ‘Autocomplete with trending searches’. (If you don’t see this option, tap Install Autocomplete on your Android device.)
Go back and then try doing a search. You won’t see trending search suggestions anymore.
To enable trending searches later, simply follow the steps above and enable ‘Autocomplete with trending searches’.
Tip: If you don’t want stories on the home tab to distract you, turn off Explore (Settings → General) to turn stories off (more on this later).
Remove all trending searches from Google on any browser
On Mac or Windows
Step 1: Open Google on your browser of choice.
Step 2: Click Settings from the bottom right corner.
Step 3: Select Search settings from the options menu.
Step 4: Under ‘Autocomplete with trending searches’ select ‘Do not show popular searches’
Step 5: Next, scroll down and click Save and then OK to save the option.
On iPhone or Android
Note: While the overall steps are the same, some user interface elements may differ depending on the browser you are using.
Step 1: Open Google on your phone’s default browser or optional browser.
Step 2: Tap the hamburger icon (three lines) and select Search settings.
Step 3: Scroll down to ‘Autocomplete with trending searches’ and select ‘Do not show popular searches’.
Step 4: Finally, click Save then Close.
Temporarily remove trending searches from Google
If you don’t mind having search trends around, but just want to get some temporary respite from them, consider using incognito or private browsing mode.
Furthermore, you also have the added benefit of having your data not recorded by the Google app. Again, the method to enable/disable private browsing may vary by your device, here’s how you can start a private session from the Google app.
Tap your profile icon → select Enable Incognito → surf as you like. To kill the session, simply disable Incognito mode from the bottom bar.
Though you also won’t get the usual amount of Explore cards in the Home screen. That’s because the Google app isn’t linked to your Google Account to create a personalized news feed.
Either way, you’ll still be able to take advantage of core functions like using Google Lens, dark mode, etc.
As you may have observed, the Google app also likes to include Trending news in your Discover feed. But unlike trending searches, they are highly personalized, so they can do more harm than good.
Thankfully, Google gives you a choice, you can turn off the trending tags entirely, or choose a topic or news genre to look forward to.
- To turn off Discover, go to the Google app → tap the profile icon → select General → turn off Discovery.
- To indicate that the Google app won’t show a certain type of content in the future, tap the three-dot icon in the Trends tab and then choose one of the following,
- Don’t care about this
- Not interested in (topic)
- Do not display content from (source)
Tip: You can also manage the language of your Google Feed to see trending tags in your regional language.
Remove trending searches from Google on any device
Unlike trending tags (Discover), trending searches can sometimes turn out to be meaningless. Thankfully, they’re pretty easy to clear up trending searches whether you’re on a Samsung phone, iPhone, Mac, or Windows.
