How to Transfer Runs from Nike+ to Strava

I’ve been using Nike+ for a few weeks and find it pretty good. You can set goals, access training programs and connect with a large and active community – all for free. Then I started using Strava to record my morning cycling and running activities.

That’s why I wanted to move my activities from Nike+ to Strava and found it a challenge.

I realized that Nike+ is a closed platform. So it’s hard to export data for use outside of its ecosystem. There are quite a few websites and mobile apps that claim to migrate Nike health and fitness data. However, Nike made some changes a few years ago that made these apps unusable.

After some research, I found two apps that still work, but with a catch. The data is a bit off but still not a deal breaker. Watch them in action to learn more.

Prerequisites

If you used Google or any other social media account to create and sign in to Nike+ and Strava, you need a password. The apps that I have shared below will ask for login details and your social media account password will not work. Open Strava and tap the menu to Sign Out. Then, tap Forgot Password to receive an email with a link to create a new password. Standard process.

Now repeat the same process for Nike Run Club and create a new password for that. Note them somewhere handy and move on to the next step.

1. Sync MyTracks

SyncMyTracks is an Android app that connects and works with a variety of health and fitness apps including Strava and Nike Run Club. The user interface is quite simple. Select Nike+ Run Club in the Export from preferences and enter your email ID and password here.

The free version of the app will not export weights, store data locally in the SyncMyTracks app, or allow you to export data by date. However, you can choose the number of activities (up to 40). Select Strava in the Import option and enter your ID and password there. When you’re ready, tap Get Started at the top right of your screen.

You’ll see a log screen with details about the app connecting to the Nike+ servers, exporting the activity one by one, and finally importing it into Strava. Depending on the number of activities you are exporting, this will take some time. See what the data looks like in Strava and how accurate it is.

Date, GPS location, map data and color recording data are exported accurately. However, data on distance traveled, average speed and duration can be slightly misleading. I don’t think it’s a deal breaker unless you’re an athlete or involved in competitive sports. I’m glad I have something to show for all the hard work I’ve put in during my run. Sure Strava said I ran a few meters less than I did and a bit slower, but it wasn’t that bad. It is just a means to an end.

In another comparison, the distance is right but the time is slightly wrong. When I check my other runs, the distance and speed data are skewed but only slightly. If you can live with that, go ahead. You can also edit these imported runs in Strava by tapping the menu. That will allow you to fix these side effects.

The paid version of SyncMyTracks will cost you $3.49. For that price, it will let you keep all activities synced between Nike Run Club and Strava, selectively export data based on dates, remove ads, and remove activity limits.

2. RunGap

RunGap is a popular app for syncing workout-related data across multiple fitness devices and apps. It is only available for iOS users. Download the app and launch it. Tap the menu icon and select Accounts & Settings.

Now tap on the Nike+ and Strava options and sign in with the user ID and password you created earlier.

The moment you log into Strava after logging into Nike+, RunGap will start syncing your data. RunGap notes that sync may not work for everyone as Nike has discontinued the API. I can see my Nike Run Club data in the Tracks section of the app.

Did you notice something special in the screenshot above? If you can’t import Nike data into Strava, export it using RunGap to Dropbox or your email ID. You can then import that file into Strava.

3. Crafts

None of the above methods work but still want your data? If there’s only a small amount of activity in your Nike account, you might consider uploading these entries manually. Click the link below and login to find the manual mode option.

While this is certainly one way, adding hundreds of runs can become tedious and time consuming. That’s too much trouble. Maybe just your best run? That one time when you broke the record or won the bet?

run for it

As noted earlier, Nike decided to close its API, making it difficult for third-party apps to provide data transfer services. Here are some ways that are still working in some capacity. Try them out to see if they work for you. If you want more control over your data, you need to leave Nike as soon as possible.
