How to Track Changes to a Windows Folder – Guiding Tech

There may be cases where you need to track changes to a Windows folder, such as files that have been added to it over time or the number of times users open the folder in a day.

Of course, you can check folders for changes and even check file attributes manually for exact tracking, but come on, performing those tasks manually isn’t something a Guiding Tech reader has to do. ????

Today, we are going to talk about a nifty app called GiPo Files utility that will get this job done with ease.

Track directory changes

Step 1: Download the GiPo Files utility and run the installer. Installation is very simple; Just follow the instructions on the screen and complete it. You may want to install it only for admins and not for every user.

Step 2: The program comes with five different modules dedicated to different file operations. To track changes, you need to open the DirMonitor tool from this suite.

Step 3: When you launch the program for the first time, choose to create a new list of settings and press Next.

Step 4: In the next step, click Add folder and browse for the folder you want to monitor. Once you’ve selected your folder, you can configure many other options like the file types and file attributes you want to track.

Step 5: Click ok to view the summary. You can even add multiple folders at once.

Step 6: Select the location of the HTML log file where all activity will be logged for future reference and click the Start button.

Step 7: Now you will see a Window showing you all the changes being made in the folder in real time. The program can also monitor changes in subfolders if necessary.

If you want to record these changes in the background, click the Mode button to push the program to the system tray.

When you finish monitoring, click the stop button. Remember, you can save the folder settings with all the filters for future use by using the save settings in the last page.

My judgment

The program does what it says but is dodgy slow. It loudly informs the user that someone is tracking changes even when it is in Icon Mode. I will rate the program 5 stars the day it comes with some Ghost Mode to monitor changes silently.

Also, I’m not sure if this will work with shared folders on the network. If any of our readers could try it and share the results with us, it would be great.
