Google Search plays an important role by acting as a gateway to the Internet world. Imagine if there was no Google search, how would one find anything? I know there are other search engines, but they rarely match Google.
For many users, Facebook also works through Google search. That should give you some idea of the importance of search. But what if it stops working? Scary, isn’t it?
Many users often have the problem that Google does not display search results. In some cases, the search bar on the home screen does not work. For others, the Google app doesn’t show search results.
To keep you from going through this trauma more, get it fixed as soon as possible. Here you will find 10 ways to fix Google search problems on Android. Start.
1. Restart the phone
Sometimes the problem is just a minor one and a simple reboot will fix it. So before you move on to other solutions, restart your device and check if that fixes the problem.
2. Check Internet Connection
Since Google needs to fetch results from the internet, try opening a web page using your phone’s browser. If that doesn’t work either, then the problem is with your internet connection. If you are using Wi-Fi, restart the modem. Also, try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
3. Add the search widget again
If the problem is only with the search bar or the search widget, you should try adding it again. For that, remove the widget by holding it and dragging towards the delete icon. Then, touch and hold an empty space on the home screen and select Widget from the options. Look for the Google search bar. Drag it to the home screen.
4. Restart Google App
Simply removing an app from recent apps won’t close it. For that you need to force stop the app. To do so, follow these steps
Step 1: Open Settings on your Android phone and go to Applications/Application Manager.
Step 2: Tap Google. On the next screen, tap Force Stop.
Step 3: Now try searching through the Google app or its widget on the home screen to restart the search service.
5. Clear Google App Cache
Clearing the cache for the Google app has also proven useful for many users. To do so, follow Steps 1 and 2 of the above solution, i.e. go to Settings > Applications/Application Manager > Google. Then tap Storage followed by Clear Cache.
Please note that clearing the cache will not delete any data or log you out of the Google app. That will happen if you use Wipe data/storage option. You should also try doing that if nothing works.
6. Disable Google Apps
Since the Google app is a pre-installed app, it cannot be uninstalled. However, you can remove all updates and bring it back to the original version by disabling it.
To do so, follow Steps 1 and 2 of the Restart Google app solution. However, instead of tapping Force Stop, tap Off. A pop-up will appear asking you to confirm your decision.
Note:
After turning it off, reboot your device and do the same steps again. Now tap Enable to bring it back. Then go to the Play Store and update the Google app.
Note:
7. Update Google Apps
Sometimes the problem is with the app itself. So try updating the Google app from the Play Store. To do that, open the Play Store and search for Google. Update apps with Google logo. Hopefully, that will fix the problem.
8. Boot in Safe Mode
While booting in safe mode also fixes various problems, it also helps in detecting the cause of the application. If search works in safe mode, then a third-party app is causing the problem. Have you installed any apps recently? Try uninstalling it and see if that fixes the problem.
There are two methods to boot in safe mode.
Press and hold the power button on your phone until you see different options like restart, Power off, etc. Press and hold the Power off button. Your phone will notify you about entering safe mode. Click Ok to confirm. You will be taken to safe mode.
Note:
2. Power and Volume Buttons
Some phones fail to enter safe mode from the above method. For such phones, you need to follow the traditional method. That is, turn off your phone first. Then keep pressing the power button until the manufacturer logo greets you. When that happens, let go of the power button and hold the volume down button until you are in safe mode.
Tip:
9. Clear browser cache
Even if the problem is with the Google app or the search bar, try clearing the cache for the default browser on your phone. We’ll show you how in the Chrome browser.
Step 1: Open Chrome on your phone and tap the three-dot icon at the top. Select Settings from the menu.
Step 2: Tap Privacy, then Clear browsing data.
Step 3: Check the box next to Cached images and files. Click Clear data.
Tip:
10. Disable Web & App Activity
Some users have suggested that turning off Web & App Activity will get search working again. If you want to try this solution, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the Google app on your phone and tap the profile picture icon at the top. Tap Manage your Google account.
Step 2: In the Data & personalization tab, tap Web & App Activity. Turn off the switch next to Web & App Activity.
Try an alternative
Hopefully, one of the solutions should have done the trick. If the problem persists then the problem is with the Google app itself. Please use Google search from your browser until Google fixes the problem.
