Facebook is a massively popular social media platform for a good reason. You can almost find everyone on it. Facebook has engaged in modifying news feeds to control the number of positive and negative updates users see. But that’s in the past, and today’s Facebook News Feed works seamlessly on your mobile device.
However, if you continue to see old updates and updates that you’ve checked a few times, the Facebook News Feed may not be up to date. This can be troublesome if you don’t want to miss important updates from your friends, colleagues, or favorite brands.
So, if Facebook News Feed isn’t updating or isn’t loading at all on your phone, here’s how you can fix it. Before we start, you should restart your Android or iPhone for everything to be clear.

1. Slow Internet Test
Slow internet connection could be the culprit. Also, Facebook News Feed does not load if your mobile data provides unstable internet connection due to poor connection. You can download and install the Speedtest app to test your Internet speed.
Facebook can eat up a lot of data in a short time, especially if you’re watching a video. If you’re on mobile data, check your carrier plan to see if you’re running out of data.
If you’re using Facebook on mobile data, consider connecting your phone to a Wi-Fi network. Also, restart your router and modem if you haven’t done so in a long time. Also, disable any active VPN service on your phone to check if it helps.
2. Facebook is down
Facebook server may be stuck due to some error and may be down in your area. To check, go to Down Detector and see if the Facebook server is up and running.
This is a good tip. If you are using DuckDuckGo, you can use the search query “Is Facebook down?” to see if the web page is loading. You can track past issues and even file complaints using official links.
Alternatively, you can always try to open the Facebook page on your computer and check if everything works fine in a web browser.
3. Adjust Facebook news feed preferences
Sometimes your news feed is updating fine, but you keep seeing old posts and updates, which gives the impression that the news feed is not up to date. To fix that, you need to adjust your newsfeed preferences for Facebook and you will get the most recent relevant post at the top.
Step 1: Open the Facebook page in your desktop browser. Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select ‘Settings & Privacy’.
Step 2: Select Feed.
Step 3: From the pop-up that opens, you can customize Posts and Connections to adjust how their content appears in your news feed:
- Posts from specific people, groups, or pages will appear first, or not appear at all.
- Add connections to Favorites, Snooze their posts, Unfollow them (but remain friends) and Reconnect with unfollowed people, groups or pages.
That’s where you can define what to watch and what not to watch. Select all your friends and people or pages from where you want to see updates from here. Once you’re done, reload the feed or refresh the app/website and you’ll see new updates instead of the old ones that just repeat.
4. Uninstall and reinstall the Facebook app
You can try uninstalling and reinstalling the Facebook app. It’s because some files may have been corrupted or you are using an outdated version of the application. So press and hold the Facebook app icon on your phone and select the appropriate option to uninstall the app.
You can then visit the Google Play Store on Android and the Apple App Store on your iPhone to reinstall the latest version of the Facebook app.
Please note that the latest version of the Facebook app may not work on older iOS and Android devices. So you need to make sure your phone is also running the latest OS version.
After reinstalling the app, log back in and check if you can scroll back to the news feed.
5. Update Facebook app
Facebook developers often release updates to official apps by wrapping fixes and patches inside them in addition to new features. Use the download links from the previous section to open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store to check if the Facebook app has any pending updates. If you see an Update button, tap it and let it install on your device.
6. Adjust date and time
By default, most smartphones can automatically set the date and time using your SIM card and carrier network. The time setting may be off if you use the VPN service for specific applications or when traveling abroad. Either way, you should check that the date and time on your phone is correct.
The difference in the date and time on your phone versus on the app’s server can crash quite a few apps. It will only take a few minutes. If there is a difference, please correct the date and time and reload to check if the Facebook News Feed is up to date.
7. Try the Facebook Lite app
Smartphone technology has come a long way and even cheap smartphones are now capable of doing so much more. In case you are using a lower end smartphone, there may not be enough RAM or CPU power to support the Facebook app. Sometimes it can be resource intensive.
So we recommend you to try the Facebook Lite app on your Android or iPhone. Facebook has developed the Lite version to work on challenging networks and low profile mobile phones. Besides, there are a lot of features removed from the Lite version and that’s why it consumes less resources on your mobile device.
8. Check for RAM problems
Even if you are using a smartphone with enough horsepower underneath, opening too many apps or running too many processes at the same time can slow down your phone. These applications can compete not only for CPU power and RAM but also for bandwidth. Close all open apps and launch the Facebook app again to see if the news feed shows up.
Some high-end smartphones come with a dedicated RAM management option in the settings. Some Android apps have aggressive RAM management, and you can add the Facebook app as an exception to data saver mode.
9. Log out and log in to your Facebook account
You can try logging out of your Facebook account from the mobile app. That won’t clear any app cache or data. It will just break the session link between your mobile and the Facebook server.
From your Android or iPhone, you can sign out of the Facebook app, restart your mobile phone, and log back into the Facebook app. That will start a new session.
10. Clear cache and data
Even if you have enough RAM and CPU power inside, it can help clear the cache and data of the Facebook app. If you don’t have enough, then this step can do wonders. Open Settings and tap Installed Apps (or wherever you can find a list of all your apps). Search Facebook here and open it.
Tap Clear data at the bottom of the screen and tap Clear cache and Clear data one by one.
Relaunch the Facebook app and hopefully, the Facebook news feed will appear and reload seamlessly.
11. Check the most recent News Feed
If you want to see the most recent news feeds, then you have to dig deeper and find the Most Recent option. Well, Facebook doesn’t make it easy. On your phone, tap the menu icon and tap See more.
Scroll a bit and you will find the Most Recent option. Tap it to update your news feed to the latest updates.
