The battery is what keeps your laptop running when it’s not connected to a power outlet. Some users are experiencing the issue of not detecting their laptop battery in Windows 10. It can seriously interfere with your work-life balance. Especially if you’re like me and always on the go. After all, that’s why laptops became so popular in the first place. So you can travel and work from anywhere, even without a constant outlet.
There could be a few reasons behind this problem. Some of the common problems are battery drain, software issues, outdated drivers, etc. I have compiled a list of all possible solutions to the problem so feel free to go through the entire list. until the battery is detected again.
Let’s get started.
1. Update Windows OS
You know what to do already. Press Windows key + I to open Settings and click Update & Security.
Check for updates here and download and install them. Don’t forget to restart your laptop before checking if the battery is working again.
2. Power adapter
It is possible that the power adapter is loose. Of course. In the case you checked, it is possible that the power adapter is not working which means the battery is not charged. I suggest you try charging with a different power adapter. Visit your nearest store to check.
3. Reconnect the Battery, Clean the Compartment
While the chances here are slim, it can still happen, especially if you recently dropped your laptop. Remove the battery from the laptop and put it back where it was. You’ll hear some sort of resounding ‘clack’ as everything snaps into place.

In fact, clean the battery compartment with a dry cloth or blower while you’re at it. Dust can accumulate anywhere and can interfere with charging. Oh, and do not use water!
4. Update drivers
Search for and open Device Manager from the Start menu. Double click on Pin option to bring up 2 items.
Right click on them one by one and click Uninstall device. Yeah do it. That will uninstall the drivers. Now remove the battery from your laptop and put it back in after a few minutes. Connect the laptop to a power source. Restart your laptop and it will automatically reinstall the driver.
Click on the battery icon on the taskbar to check if the laptop has a battery charge or not.
5. Power Troubleshooter
Windows 10 comes with a troubleshooter option for built-in apps and those developed internally by Microsoft. Open Settings again (Windows key+I) and search for Find and fix problems with your computer’s power settings.
Click the Advanced option to select Apply repair automatically.
Click Next and follow the onscreen instructions from there. Restart your computer once if necessary before testing again.
6. Capacitor Discharge/Electricity Recycling
Whether your laptop doesn’t detect the battery or has detected it but isn’t charging, discharging the capacitors can help. Turn off your laptop and remove the battery and all external peripherals. Some Lenovo models have a fixed battery, in which case you’ll either skip this step or open the back panel and remove the battery from the motherboard manually. If unsure, see a technician.
Once removed, press and hold the power button for at least 60 seconds. That will discharge the remaining battery from the motherboard. The motherboard stores some power for certain tasks, such as running the clock. Have you ever wondered why the time and date are always correct even when you turn off your computer? Leave it like that overnight then reconnect the battery, connect to power and start up.
Doing so will also resolve overheating issues that are often associated with batteries not charging or undetected issues.
7. Battery report
Open Command Prompt with administrative rights by searching for it in the Start menu and typing the command below.
powercfg / battery report
This will generate a battery report that will be saved here.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\battery-report.htm
Open the report and go through it to see if there is a problem with the battery. At this point you can also try another command that will also generate a battery report.
powercfg -energy
A report will be generated and will automatically open in a new tab in Internet Explorer.
8. Update BIOS/UEFI
While most new computers come with UEFI firmware, some older models are still running BIOS. You need to update the firmware here to fix known bugs. Type ‘msinfo’ without quotes and open System Information for your current BIOS version.
Here is the complete guide on how to enter BIOS mode. Some BIOS modules come with a built-in update option. Since the layout can vary between motherboards, you’ll have to find it yourself. It will only take a few minutes.
If there is no update option, you will have to visit the manufacturer’s website to download the latest BIOS firmware version and store it on a USB drive. Here is a good guide on how to safely flash a new version.
Recharge, Relax, Repeat
