Microsoft Edge’s move to the Chromium rendering engine has made it a better browser in almost every respect. It renders web pages without problems, supports a huge library of extensions, and feels snappy and responsive. To make matters even better, it also has a dark mode function.
Microsoft Edge Chromium’s dark mode extends beyond the dark theme found in non-Chromium versions of the browser. As long as websites have built-in support for darker color palettes, it will also display them in dark mode. Let’s see how to enable and use this function.
Enable Dark Mode in Microsoft Edge Chromium
Whether you use Windows or macOS, the dark mode functionality of Microsoft Edge Chromium works the same on both platforms. Just like with Google Chrome, you can make the browser match the operating system color scheme — Edge will then show up in dark mode whenever the system color mode in Windows or macOS is set to Dark . But that’s not all. There is also a dedicated option to enable dark mode for the browser itself at all times.
Step 1: Start by opening the Edge menu (click the three dots in the upper-right corner of the browser window). Then click Install.
Step 2: Click Appearance on the left navigation pane.
Step 3: Click the pull-down menu next to Theme. Select Dark to switch the browser to dark mode immediately. If you want Microsoft Edge Chromium to match the color scheme in Windows and macOS, choose System Default instead.
Note:
Once enabled, the entire Microsoft Edge Chromium theme will display in dark mode, with different shades of darkness used to identify browser elements. Any website that specifically supports a darker palette will automatically detect the browser’s color preferences and load in dark mode.
Microsoft Edge Chromium has dark mode enabled.
However, most websites are not yet capable of supporting this functionality, so most of the time you will only see the browser theme displayed in dark mode.
Thankfully, Microsoft Edge Chromium comes with an experimental feature that can force the browser to display web pages in dark mode. We’ll look at that further below.
Control System Color in Windows 10 and macOS
If you have selected the System Default option in Microsoft Edge Chromium, the browser will automatically go into dark mode whenever the Dark system color scheme is selected in Windows and macOS. That’s perfect if you like a consistent experience across the operating system and supported apps.
10 . window
Right-click the desktop, and then select Personalize. On the Display Settings app, click Colors, then use the menu under Choose your color to toggle between Light and Dark color modes for the operating system and supported apps.
Alternatively, you can select the Custom option to separately manage colors for the operating system and supported applications.
macOS Mojave and Catalina
Go to System Preferences (Apple menu > System Preferences), then click General. Use the Appearance controls (Light, Dark, and Auto) at the top of the screen to switch the color scheme.
Select Dark to enable dark mode for the entire operating system and supported applications, or select Auto to automatically turn Dark mode on and off at night and during the day, respectively.
Force render all web pages in Dark Mode
Microsoft Edge Chromium has an experimental feature that allows you to force all web pages to be displayed in dark mode. It works fine, but every now and then you’ll run into some weird inversion issues. If you don’t mind, here’s how to enable it.
Tip: The following experimental feature is also available in other Chromium-based browsers
Step 1: Enter edge://flags/#enable-force-dark in the address bar of the new tab in Microsoft Edge, and then press Enter.
Step 2: Click the pull-down menu next to Force dark mode for web content, then select Enabled.
Step 3: Click Restart to restart the browser.
Microsoft Edge Chromium will force display all web pages in dark mode from now on. The experimental feature works outside of the color controls found in the browser’s Settings panel — meaning you can view web pages in dark mode even while using a regular browser theme.
Here, Microsoft Edge Chromium is forcing the display of a web page in dark mode.
If you want to disable this feature, repeat the steps above. However, you need to select Default while using the menu next to Force Dark Mode for web content.
Don’t fall off the edge
Dark mode provides the perfect means to surf the Internet without being dazzled, especially late at night. While Microsoft Edge Chromium’s dark mode is not universal, let’s not forget the fact that you can force dark mode almost anywhere by using an experimental browser flag.
Next up: Microsoft Edge Chromium is a great web browser. But how does it work against Firefox? Let’s find out together.
