How to Disable Keyboard in Windows Using a Shortcut

One of the most important components of your PC can be a nuisance if you have a pet that likes to jump towards your keyboard or a kid who can type random nonsense while you’re away.

The scarier part would be if an important message/mailing thread was opened and that nonsense ended there.

But there’s an easy way to prevent this from happening whenever you leave your keyboard by locking it via a custom shortcut and unlocking it the same way.

All it requires is HowToGeek’s Locker Keyboard app, which is a modified version of Lexikos’ AutoHotKey script.

Here’s how to get started

Download the Keypad and Unzip files from the folder in your desired location.

You’ll see some icon files, text documents, .akh script files, and application .exe files — the latter two being the more important ones.

If you don’t have AutoHotKey installed, go to the ‘Keyboardlocker.exe’ application file, which is a standalone program that allows you to lock and unlock your keyboard.

Once the Lock Keyboard is activated, an icon will appear in the application icon tray on the taskbar.

To lock the keyboard after running the application, you need to press ‘CTRL+ALT+L’ and the icon will change.

To unlock you will have to type ‘unlock’ from the locked keyboard. Sometimes the unlocking process can take a few seconds, so don’t worry, your keyboard will unlock eventually.

If you have AutoHotKey installed, you can simply run the ‘.ahk’ script. Furthermore, those familiar with AutoHotKey can edit the script to create custom shortcuts to lock and unlock the keyboard.

Once locked, all keyboard keys including Caps, Num Lock and media keys are disabled but combinations like ‘CTRL+ALT+DELETE’ and ‘Win+L’ will still work.

You can even choose to receive notifications when the keyboard is locked or unlocked using the bubble notification above the tray. Just right click on the Keyboard Locker icon and click ‘Show tray notifications’.
