How to Customize YouTube for the Best User Experience

I remember my last year of college. I am giving a presentation on the various ways of executing criminals in the Middle Ages. Part of it includes streaming YouTube videos in the classroom. I’m scrolling through my homepage on a laptop hooked up to a projector and trying to find that one video. And that’s where it went wrong: a large, bright thumbnail depicting a video on how boys should do their makeup to look like a girl.

It felt rather inappropriate for the whole class – they laughed it off and I felt embarrassed. I don’t have a problem with stuff like that but it makes me think if there’s anything I can do to avoid it in the future.

YouTube can show you a lot of disturbing content that you don’t want to see on your account home page. However, there is a way around it. You can customize the YouTube homepage to provide you with the content you choose and love. You can also use it to review all the great things you’ve discovered and play with them.

You can customize YouTube on your computer as well as your smartphone as both platforms use a similar interface including related options. So read on if you want to customize your YouTube homepage to get the most out of it.

How to delete videos you don’t want to watch

As mentioned above, YouTube can suggest you videos that you don’t want to watch or feel embarrassed if other people are watching you scroll through them. Here’s how to remove these videos from your YouTube homepage.

If you are using a PC

If you’re using YouTube on a desktop or laptop computer, the steps are relatively simple.

Step 1: Log into your YouTube to access the homepage.

Step 2: Scroll through to find a video you don’t want there because it doesn’t meet your interests, click the three vertical dots next to the video name and then click Don’t care.

This will make YouTube understand that you are not interested in such recommendations and YouTube will try to filter out similar videos in the future.

Note:

If you are using a smartphone

The instructions for removing videos that do not match your interests from YouTube are quite simple if you are using Android or iOS.

Note that recommendations work side-by-side across all platforms because your YouTube account syncs across all devices. So turning off the video from the home page on your PC by clicking Don’t care will also affect your smartphone recommendations.

Step 1: Scroll through the YouTube app on your Android or iOS to find a video that you want to delete. In my case, it was Triple H banging poor Jimmy Fallon on his desk. I can’t watch my favorite host Jim get stoned, so I want to get rid of it.

Step 2: Click the three vertical dots, then the clock to Don’t care.

That is all. YouTube will know better now and try not to show similar videos in the future by filtering out categories.

How to clear recent searches on YouTube

It’s completely understandable if you want to remove your recent searches from the YouTube search bar. You may want to show off to your friends that beautiful goal Messi scored last week, but your search history contains things like the benefits of picking your nose while eating. You don’t want your friend to see that – obviously not!

This option is now available on the web version of YouTube, and it also shows up on your smartphone. Here’s a screenshot of my recent searches on the YouTube app on my Android.

Okay, so let’s see how you can delete them. Kinda easy. Let’s say, I want to remove the search term “pes 19 android” from my search bar. Here’s how you can do it.

Step 1: Long press on the search query and the following pop-up will show up.

Step 2: Now you know what to do. Just click Delete. You can follow the same step on the web version of YouTube. Start embarrassing search queries!

How to create playlists for your favorite YouTube videos

Now that we’ve cleaned up the unnecessary content on our dear YouTube, it’s time to stick to the content we like and admire on the platform. The YouTube homepage regularly updates itself, so you can’t hope to find the awesome video you watched yesterday about cats doing tricks. It may disappear. So what do you do? You save these videos.

There are different options to do it on both web and smartphone versions.

Add Video to Liked playlist

If you like a video, you can click the like (dislike) button as shown in the screenshot below:

This will add the video to your list of liked videos on YouTube, which you can access later. You can find the list of liked videos on your PC and smartphone as shown in the screenshot below.

Liked video option on You Tube

You will find the Liked Videos option by clicking the menu button in the top left corner of the YouTube homepage. There is an option to shuffle them.

You will find Liked Videos on your smartphone app by clicking the Gallery option in the bottom menu. From there, you can also shuffle them.

Save video to playlist

Let’s say you’re watching an educational video that you don’t necessarily want to like because it will intrude on your list of liked videos, such as this one with only cat videos. If that’s the case, you can add these videos to a new playlist.

How to add a YouTube video to a new playlist

You can easily add videos to your favorites list or create new playlists to better separate them. You can even add them to the Watch Later section, which is YouTube’s default playlist and can be accessed on PCs and smartphones as depicted in the screenshot below.

If you are on the homepage, clicking the three vertical dots next to the video title will highlight the following menu. Next, click Add to playlist.

There you can create a new playlist by giving it a new name and choosing a privacy level.

If you are on the video page, click the save button. Chances are YouTube will automatically add the video to the most recent playlist. In my case it was Watch Later. If you want to change the playlist, follow these steps:

Step 1: Click the Saved to recent playlist pop-up window displayed at the bottom of the screen and move the corresponding video to the new playlist.

If you missed that pop-up, skip to step 2.

Step 2: Click the Saved button again and move the video to the desired playlist.

YouTube according to your taste

Following these recommendations will ensure that you are having the best YouTube experience on your smartphone and PC. However, YouTube can quickly pick up suggestions and add unwanted videos to interfere with your experience. To prevent that from happening, you can try a few things.

You can always watch a weird video that doesn’t suit your taste by watching it on YouTube in an incognito tab. That won’t cause YouTube to add a video to your recommendation because you’re not signed in. If the video requires you to be an adult, you will need to sign in. In this case, you will have to clear the recent search, or just delete similar suggestions in the future by clicking the Not Interested button as shown in the steps above.

I hope these steps give you a distraction-free experience the next time you binge-watch YouTube.
