Google released useful quick tap gestures with Android 12 in 2021. With a simple double tap gesture on the back of your phone, you can take quick screenshots, pause/play media and perform some tasks without interacting with your phone. Here’s how you can customize and use quick tab gestures on Android.
The touch back gesture is part of the accessibility add-on on iPhone. With Android 12, Google added the same feature across all Android phones. The company even improved this functionality with the flashlight option in Android 13. Next time you want to find your seat in a dark movie theater, double-tap the back and turn on the flashlight. Let’s set it up and make the necessary changes.
Enable quick tap gestures on Android
Assuming you have updated to Android 13 on your Android phone then you can enable this option. To enable quick tap gestures on your Android phone, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Swipe up from your Android phone’s home screen to open the app drawer.
Step 2: Open Settings with the familiar gear icon.
Step 3: Navigate to System.
Step 4: Select Gestures.
Step 5: Select ‘Quick tap to start action.’
Step 6: Enable the ‘Use Quick Press’ toggle from the following menu.
Quick taps on Android
You can perform one action at a time on the back of your Android phone. Here are all the options available for quick tap gestures.
Step 1: Go to the Gestures menu in Android Settings (refer to the steps above).
Step 2: Tap ‘Quick tap to start action.’
Here are the following options to use with a quick tap.
- Screen capture
- Activate Google Assistant
- Play or pause media
- View recent apps menu
- show notification
- Flashlight on/off
You can set the flashlight to turn on or off without unlocking the phone. Taking a screenshot by double-tapping the back of the phone is also a neat add-on. If you stream a lot of music and videos from your Android phone to your smart speaker or TV, use quick tap gestures to play or pause the media. Very few recent apps and useful notification display options with retouch gestures.
Open a specific app with a quick tap gesture
Android also allows you to launch frequently used apps with quick tap gestures. If you use apps like Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat throughout the day, make some tweaks to your settings to open your favorite apps with a quick tap on the back.
Step 1: Navigate to the Gestures menu in Android Settings (check the steps above).
Step 2: Select ‘Quick tap to start action.’
Step 3: Scroll down and tap the radio button next to ‘Open App’.

Step 5: Choose your favorite app from the following menu.
You can even assign a tap back gesture to open a specific action in the app.
Step 6: Tap the settings gear next to an app to check the available actions.
Step 7: Choose what happens when you open this app with Quick Tap.
For example, when you select Google Calendar, you can choose from new reminders, new events, and new task tasks. Similarly, you can open a new tab or incognito mode in Google Chrome through a quick tap gesture.
For supported apps, you’ll see a settings gear next to the app name. When you uninstall the selected app from your Android phone, Quick Tap is off until you select another app or action.
Activate the stronger faucet
How often does your Android phone trigger taps and gestures in your pocket or bag? You should turn on the faucet harder to avoid accidentally touching your phone.
Step 1: Go to the Gestures menu in Settings (check the steps above).
Step 2: Select ‘Quick tap to start action.’
Step 3: Turn on the ‘Request a stronger faucet’ toggle.
Our Experience with Quick Tap Gestures on Android
When using Android 13 on the Pixel 6, we found that the Quick Tap gestures were quite accurate. There are some flaws due to the thick and rough box. However, removing the instance solves the problem. Your phone also vibrates to trigger the following tap action. In future updates, we’d love to see triple tap to unlock more action via retouch on your Android phone.
