The Steam Deck is one of the most powerful handheld gaming consoles, but its Linux base still allows for a ton of customization. You can personalize it to reflect your style and preferences, including the keyboard theme. If you’re wondering how to change the keyboard theme on your Steam Deck, you’ve come to the right place.
The Steam Deck’s virtual keyboard is crucial for communication and navigation. Customizing its theme can enhance your user experience, making it more enjoyable and visually appealing. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to change your keyboard theme, explore new themes, and delve into custom themes using Decky Loader and CSS Loader. So, let’s get to it.
How to Open the Steam Deck Keyboard
Before diving into customization, let’s start with the basics of accessing the Steam Deck’s virtual keyboard. By default, you can tap on any text input field across the Steam Deck’s interface, whether browsing the web, searching the Steam store, or logging into a service. The virtual keyboard will automatically appear.
However, if the virtual keyboard doesn’t open, you can activate it manually. Press the Steam Button and the X button simultaneously. Now, the virtual keyboard is ready for use.
How to Change Steam Deck Keyboard Themes
Now that you know how to trigger the virtual keyboard, here’s how to change its appearance.
Step 1: Press the Steam button. In the pop-up pane, select Settings.
Step 2: Inside Settings, navigate to the Keyboard settings from the right panel. Then, on the right side, you should see a setting for ‘Current Keyboard Theme’. Tap on the drop-down menu next to it.
Step 3: You should now get a list of all the pre-installed themes, including Default Theme, Night Shift, Candy Coded, and Steam Green. Feel free to browse and select one that tickles your fancy.
Step 4: The Steam Deck also allows you to get a preview of your selected theme. To do that, tap on the keyboard icon next to the theme name to see a live preview of your selected keyboard theme.
How to Get New Steam Deck Virtual Keyboard Themes
The default themes are a good starting point, but there’s a lot to the story. Valve lets you buy new themes for your keyboard as well. Here’s how to do that.
Step 1: Once again, navigate to Settings > Keyboard. There should be an option labeled ‘Find More Keyboard Themes’. Tap on the ‘Visit the Points Shop’ button next to it.
Step 2: This should now take you to the Steam Store. Here, you’ll find a selection of themes purchasable with your Steam Points. Tap on the keyboard of your choice to purchase it.
And that’s it. Once a theme is purchased, it will be in your Current Keyboard Theme drop-down menu, as shown previously.
How to Install Custom Themes on Steam Deck
While that’s the official way of installing and changing the keyboard theme on your Steam Deck, that’s not the end of the road. For those who want to take customization to the next level, installing custom themes through Decky Loader and CSS Loader offers endless possibilities. Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1: First, ensure to install the Decky Loader and CSS Loader onto your Steam Deck. These custom plugins allow you to install third-party themes created by the community onto your handheld console.
Note: Check our guide to install Decky Loader and CSS Loader on Steam Deck.
Step 2: Once installed, press the Quick Action key on your Steam Deck. Then, scroll to the last option for Decky Loader, and tap on ‘CSS Loader’.
Step 3: Inside the CSS Loader section, you should see a list of all the installed custom themes, if any. However, we need to download new themes for your keyboard. To do that, tap on the Download icon at the top.
Step 4: This should take you to the download section for all themes. Tap on the Filter option on the right.
Step 5: A pop-up showing all the different categories should appear. Here, tap on Keyboard.
Step 6: The downloads page should now refresh to highlight only keyboard themes. Select the theme you wish to download.
Step 7: Then, inside the theme’s page, tap on Install. The theme will automatically be downloaded and installed to CSS Loader.
Step 8: Finally, to apply the theme, once again open CSS Loader inside Decky Loader, as done in the third step. The theme you downloaded should be available. Enable the toggle next to it.
Step 9: And that’s it. Your new keyboard theme is ready to use.
Note: It’s worth highlighting that custom keyboard themes downloaded via CSS Loader only work on the Default Theme. As such, if your theme isn’t showing up, go to Settings > Keyboard and change the theme to Default Theme. Once done, re-enable the custom theme inside CSS Loader, and it should work properly.
Change the Keyboard Theme Easily
Customizing your Steam Deck’s keyboard theme is more than a cosmetic change. It’s a way to personalize your device and enhance your gaming experience. Whether you’re opting for a pre-made theme from Valve or diving into the world of custom themes with Decky Loader and CSS Loader, the possibilities are endless. So, go ahead and customize your Steam Deck all you want, as you want.
