OnePlus’ latest flagship, the OnePlus 7 Pro, is the company’s first phone with a curved display. And thanks to this, you can receive alerts for notifications even when the phone is face down. The feature works pretty much like the one found on Samsung flagships and brightens the edges of the screen whenever you get a notification.
However, OnePlus did not allow users to customize these edge lighting effects until now. Thankfully, OnePlus has included this feature in its latest open beta update for the device. The feature, called Horizontal Lights, now allows you to customize the edge lighting, and that’s what we’ll talk about in this article. So without further ado, let’s see how you can change the edge lighting on your OnePlus 7 Pro.
How to change edge lighting on OnePlus 7 Pro
To change the edge lighting on your device, make sure you’re running the latest Android 10 based OxygenOS open beta on your OnePlus 7 Pro. If you are running an older version of the software, you will not be able to determine the settings mentioned below.
To update your phone to the latest open beta version of the ROM, visit the OnePlus forums and download the ROM on your phone. Then follow the instructions in the post to flash it on your device.
Note:
Once you’re all set, follow these easy steps to change the edge lighting on your OnePlus 7 Pro:
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your OnePlus 7 Pro.
Step 2: Here, tap the Display option to open the display settings.
Step 3: In the following menu, scroll down to find Ambient Display setting and tap it.
Step 4: Then choose the Horizontal Light setting.
That will open a customization window in which you can change the color of the edge light. Currently, OnePlus gives you the option to choose from four different colors – blue, red, yellow, and purple effects.
You can try them out by tapping on the color of your choice and the corresponding animation will play in the empty space above. To select the color of your choice, simply tap it and then check the box in the top right corner. Pretty simple, right?
Now, this is not the only new feature you get on the latest version of OxygenOS on the OnePlus 7 Pro. The company has included a few other cool features that you should check out.
Enable Smart Display on your OnePlus 7 Pro
With the update, OnePlus has also provided a new Smart Display feature. It gives you access to more relevant information right on the surrounding screens, including upcoming calendar events and the songs you’re listening to. Here’s how you can turn it on:
Step 1: Go to the Settings app on your phone.
Step 2: Tap the Display option to open the display settings.
Step 3: In the following menu, scroll down to find Ambient Display setting and tap it.
Step 4: Then, tap the switch next to Smart Display to enable this feature.
You can then configure what you want to see with the option by tapping it and then turning on the switch next to the Media Player and Calendar Events options in the following screen.
Check out the new game space
With Android 10, OnePlus removed Game mode from the Utilities section of the settings app and included it as a standalone app. The new Game Space app now contains all the games you have installed on your device so you don’t have to scroll through your entire app drawer looking for them.
The app shows how much time you spent playing each game. That’s great for tracking your smartphone usage. In addition, the app contains all the features of the older Game mode, including graphics optimization, eSports-ready Fnatic mode, and settings to manage incoming notifications.
Block spam messages with specific keywords
OnePlus’ inbuilt SMS app has also received a cool new feature that allows you to block spam messages based on keywords. The new Block by Keyword option can be found inside the app settings, which you can access by tapping the three-dot menu in the top right corner, then selecting Settings from the drop-down menu.
In the settings you will need to tap on Blocking Settings. Then on the next page you will find a new Block by Keyword option. Tap it to set up a new keyword and then tap the plus icon in the next page to add a new keyword.
Once the setup is done, any incoming messages with the preset keyword will be automatically blocked and you will not receive any notification about this.
Try out new camera features
The native camera app on the OnePlus 7 Pro also has some cool new features. First of all, the app now allows you to record videos with the ultra-wide lens, something that was missing in the previous version of OxygenOS. And switching between lenses is as simple as tapping the tree icon above the shutter button.
On top of that, the Nightscape mode on the device now also works with wide-angle lenses. Switching between lenses is also simple here.
Just tap the tree icon above the shutter button and you’re good to go. Now you’ll be able to click great landscape photos even when there’s not enough light. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
Customize the horizon lights on your OnePlus 7 Pro
Now that you know how to customize the skyline lights on your OnePlus 7 Pro, which one would you choose? The purple effect is definitely my favourite, and it’s something I chose on my phone. But if you are using the almond variant, then I’m sure the golden effect will really suit your device. Check out all the other features to get the most out of Android 10 on your OnePlus 7 Pro.
