In essence, yes, Alan Wake 2 is a horror game. While the original Alan Wake contained horror elements, particularly in its enemies and story, its focus on combat made it much more action-oriented than its sequel.

Alan Wake 2 embraces its Lynchian horror roots and creates more of a psychological supernatural survival horror akin to some of the best games like it. After all, a game that encourages its characters to be afraid of the dark has to be scary… right?

As a boy who loves his horror games but is terribly skittish, Alan Wake 2 is very scary at times, particularly when it comes to atmosphere and jump scares. But, that isn’t to say it doesn’t have its Twin Peaks-esque moments of brevity that only add to its uncanny valley.

While there is certainly some gore (particularly when it is setting up its story), its horror is mostly found in the otherworldly presences that haunt Bright Falls and The Dark Place. Thankfully, the residents of Bright Falls have some pretty great moments that break up the horror.

Additionally, its enemies are much more brutal this time around, especially on the higher difficulties. The best way to compare just how scary is something along the lines of the Resident Evil 2 remake.
