Who is Ann Wolfe?
On 17 January 1971, businessman David Wolfe II and his partner Theresa Eve Walker, a home health aide welcomed a daughter Ann Wolfe. She was born in Oberlin, Louisiana, United States where her father owned a general store, meat store and a night club. During her childhood, she moved to Austin, Texas.
Being born into a well-to-do African-American family, she had good education unlike most who weren’t privy to come from wealthy homes. She may have suffered some racial discrimination at the time as she recalls having to fight two white boys after school one day in the past.
Despite coming from a good home, life happened to Wolfe who returned to Austin, Texas in 1996 as a homeless single mother with two daughters. She worked construction to fend for her family before meeting ‘Pops’ Billingsley, her first boxing trainer before joining the ranks of RPM Promotions as a professional.
In her amateur career under the tutelage of Billingsley, Wolfe recorded a 3-1 and fought 1998 U.S. National Championships. At the tournament, she triumphed over counterparts and made it to the semifinal where she lost to La’Kiea Coffen in a 3rd round disqualification.
Wolfe soon turned professional and her first fight was up against Brenda Lee Bell whom she dispatched by a four-round decision. She had a total of 26 fights, of which she lost just once (her fifth career fight against Valerie Manfood, a veteran and future world champion).
Her best career highlight came against undefeated champion Vonda Ward on May 8, 2004 in Biloxi, Mississippi for the IBA world Light Heavyweight championship. Wolfe won by a TKO in the first round and commentators labelled her punch “the best knockout punch in a women’s boxing history”.
Over the course of her career, she held IFBA Jr. Middleweight title, IFBA world Super Middleweight title, NABA World Super Middleweight Championship and IBA world Light Heavyweight championship and retired in 2006 after her last fight against Lisa Ested which she won by decision.
Post retirement, Wolfe has been working as a trainer. She has since trained her oldest daughter, Jennifer Fenn and James Kirkland. Through the Ann Wolfe Boxing & Fitness in Austin, Texas, many more have had trainer from the former world champion.
