Who is Neil deGrasse Tyson?
Neil deGrasse Tyson was born on October 5, 1958 in Manhattan. He was the second of three children by Cyril deGrasse Tyson and Sunchita Maria Tyson. His siblings are Stephen Joseph Tyson and Lynn Antipas Tyson.
Cyril, his father was a sociologist, human resource commissioner for New York City major John Lindsay and also made a name as the first Director of Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited. Neil’s mother was a gerontologist for the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
Tyson grew up in the Castle Hill neighborhood of the Bronx, and later in Riverdale. From kindergarten throughout high school, Tyson attended public schools in the Bronx: PS 36 Unionport, PS 81 Robert J. Christen, the Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy (MS 141), and graduated from The Bronx High School of Science in 1976 where he was captain of the wrestling team and editor-in-chief of the Physical Science Journal.
Among other universities, Tyson attended Harvard University, Columbia University, and the University of Texas in Austin. From 1991 to 1994, he was a postdoctoral research associate at Princeton University. He joined the Hayden Planetarium’s staff in 1994 and joined Princeton University in 1995 as a visiting research scientist and lecturer.
Tyson graduated with a Master’s in astronomy from the University of Texas in Austin after attending the Bronx High School of Science, Harvard University, and earning a physics major there. In 1991, he moved back to New York and received his Ph. D. in astrophysics from Columbia University.
In 1996, he was appointed director of the planetarium, where he oversaw a $210 million reconstruction project that was completed in 2000. Since 1996, he has served as the Hayden Planetarium’s director at the Rose Center ( Earth and Space in New York City. Since 2003, Tyson has served as a research fellow in the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History, which he founded in 1997.
