Who is Lil Durk?
Durk Derrick Banks also known as Lil Durk was born on October 19, 1992 in Englewood, Chicago in the United States. When he was just seven months old, he father Dontay Banks Sr was incarcerated and serving two life sentences without a possibility of parole. He and his elder brother Dontay Banks Jr were raised by their mother.
Durk had a very difficult life as a child, recalling that there wasn’t enough food at home at times. He created a YouTube and Myspace account and began rapping. Unbeknownst to him, he was gathering pace and people were loving him. The expansion of his fanbase made him take the rapping seriously.
He dropped out of Paul Robeson High School in order to join the Black Disciples, a street gang in Chicago. During which time he had become a father and felt the need to be more serious with his career in rapping so as to cater for his child.
Not long after becoming a member, he got entangled with the law and did time in October 2011 for firearms charges. Later during the trial, he pleaded guilty on reduced charges of aggravated unauthorized use of a weapon, according to court records.
In the early years of his career, Lil Durk was associated with the Glo Gang label promoted by another Chicago-based rapper, Chief Keef. But he was never signed into the label. Due to this reason Lil Durk started to create his own image in the music world.
After the success of his first two singles, Lil Durk released a mixtape called ‘Life Ain’t No Joke’. This mixtape was downloaded 216,000 times on the online mixtape distribution platform DatPiff. Social media platforms played a big role in popularizing ‘Life Ain’t No Joke’.
In December 2012, Lil Durk released a new track called ‘L’s Anthem’ which featured French Montana and became very popular. The popularity of ‘L’s Anthem’ helped Durk to enter into a joint venture with Def Jam Recordings. His fourth mixtape, ‘Signed to the Streets’ was released on October 14, 2013.
His career goes on and on from there although he’s had to deal with a whole lot. On September 26, 2013, OTF member and close collaborator of Durk, L’A Capone was shot and killed after leaving a recording studio. On May 31, 2014, Durk’s cousin, rapper McArthur “OTF Nunu” Swindle, was murdered.
Then, on March 27, 2015, Uchenna “OTF Chino Dolla” Agina, Durk’s friend and manager, was also shot dead. On November 6, 2020, Lil Durk’s affiliate King Von was murdered in Atlanta. On June 6, 2021, Durk’s brother, Dontay “DThang” Banks Jr, was shot and killed outside of a Chicago nightclub.
In the early hours of July 11, 2021, Durk was targeted in a home invasion, where he and his girlfriend India exchanged gunfire with the suspects. Nobody was harmed, and the suspects fled the scene.
Lil Durk as of date is unmarried but he has been in a relationship with India Royale, an Instagram model. In December 2021, the couple announced their engagement. however, they parted ways in September 2022. Lil Durk has six children named Willow, Zayden, Du’mier, Bella, Angelo and Skyler.
