He was born in St. Louis, Missouri United States to a Muslim family. His father was a percussionist for ‘The Symphony’, a ’70s group while his mother was a dancer.

Kine Gueye his mother was raised in a family of Quranic scholars in Kaolack, Senegal. Akon spent his early days in Senegal before his family moved to Union City, New Jersey when he was seven years old. Being from a music oriented family, he learnt to play five instruments including drums, guitar and djembe.

Before finally settling in Newark, he was splitting time between the United States and Senegal. He talked about having difficulties blending with other kids. He and his brother lived with their parents up until high school when they parents relocated to Atlanta, Georgia with the rest of the family thereby leaving Akon and his elder brother in Jersey City. He schooled at William L. Dickinson High School in Jersey City.

He began his career in the mid-2000s as a hip-hop artist but has since branched out into other genres, including R&B and pop.
