Hank Azaria career
Since 1989, Azaria has provided the voices of numerous characters in the animated sitcom The Simpsons, including Chief Wiggum, Moe Szyslak, Comic Book Guy, Snake Jailbird, and, in the past, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Lou, Carl Carlson, and Bumblebee Man.
After joining the show as a regular in its second season, he rose to fame. He has received six Primetime Emmys, an Annie Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance.
Additionally, Azaria is well-known for his live-action parts in motion pictures, including America’s Sweethearts (2001), Shattered Glass (2003), Along Came Polly (2004), Run Fatboy Run (2007), Quiz Show (1994), The Birdcage (1996), Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), Godzilla (1998), Mystery Men (1999), Cradle Will Rock (1999), and The Smurfs 2 (2013).
He played the lead parts in the drama series Huff on Showtime (2004–2006) and the sitcom Brockmire on IFC (2017–2020). Ray Donovan, Friends, Mad About You, and Friends all featured Azaria in recurring parts.
For his performance in Tuesdays with Morrie, he was awarded the 1999 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture.
From 1994 to 1996, he provided the voice of Eddie Brock/Venom in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. He provided the voice of Bartok the bat in the animated film Anastasia (1997), and he returned to the character in the direct-to-video prequel Bartok the Magnificent (1999).
Azaria received the Annie Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement for Voice Acting by a Male Performer in an Animated Feature Production for his role in Anastasia.
In addition, he provided the voices of Harold Zoid in the 2001 Futurama episode “That’s Lobstertainment!”, Abbie Hoffman and Allen Ginsberg in Chicago 10 (2007), and Eric in the American dub of the television series Stressed Eric.
Carlos and Phil were voiced by Azaria in the 2011 movie Hop. The majority of reviews for the movie were poor, however, Azaria’s performance received high marks.
For instance, Emma Simmonds of Time Out described him as an “unflappable presence, voicing two characters with style,” while Sandie Chen of The Washington Post stated that “Azaria has been honing his over-the-top Spanish accent since The Birdcage, so anything he says grabs some laughs.”
He provided the voice of The Mighty Sven in Happy Feet Two later that year. In Mack & Moxy, Azaria plays Shelfish Sheldon’s voice. In the 2016 film Bordertown, he also provides the voice of Bud Buckwald, the Texan border agent who serves as the main character.
Azaria is a Democratic Party supporter. He has admitted that if he hadn’t become an actor, he would have become a therapist and that he loves Elvis Costello’s music.
The charitable organization “Determined to Succeed” which provides educational help was co-founded by Azaria. He received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (DHL) degree from Tufts University on May 22, 2016.
