Porter and his brother Lloyd relocated to Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in 2004. He performed as well as worked as a chef at Lloyd’s now-closed restaurant Bread-Stuy.

Porter started out doing shows at local establishments like Sista’s Place and Solomon’s Porch before making his way to the Harlem nightclub St. Nick’s Pub, where he was a weekly fixture. What would eventually become Porter’s touring band was formed during this stint.

Porter collaborated with Membran Entertainment Group to record two albums on the Motéma label, Water (2010) and Be Good (2012), before joining Blue Note Records (a division of Universal Music Group) on May 17, 2013. Liquid Spirit, his third album, was released in the US on September 17, 2013, and in Europe on September 2, 2013.

The record took home the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Record, produced by Brian Bacchus. Liquid Spirit reached the top 10 on the UK album charts and saw a level of commercial success uncommon for jazz recordings. With over 100,000 units sold in the UK, it received a gold certification from the BPI.

Porter released “The ‘In’ Crowd” as a single in August 2014. Porter sang “As Time Goes By” during the televised commemorative performance, VE Day 70: A Party to Remember, held on May 9, 2015, from Horse Guards Parade in London.

On May 6, 2016, he released Take Me to the Alley, his fourth album. The album of the week in the UK was Alexis Petridis’s.

Porter gave a performance on the Pyramid Stage at the 2016 Glastonbury Festival on June 26, 2016. Porter had a performance at Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park from Hyde Park, London, in September of 2016.

Later, in November, he would take part in the annual BBC Children in Need show, which was dedicated to Sir Terry Wogan, a longtime supporter of Porter and past host of the show.

Porter sang the song “Holding On” on BBC One’s The Graham Norton Show in January 2017. He took part in the Later… with Jools Holland: Later 25 concert at the Royal Albert Hall in September 2017.

With Jeff Goldblum at the keyboard, he sang the song “Mona Lisa” on The Graham Norton Show in October 2017.

Porter released All Rise, his sixth studio album, on August 28, 2020. Porter’s Greatest Hits compilation CD, Still Rising – The Collection was published on the Blue Note label on November 5, 2021. He sang the song “Revival” on The Graham Norton Show that same day.

Porter sang on Jools’ Annual Hootenanny on New Year’s Eve in 2021. Porter performed the specially written song “A Life Lived with Grace” at the lighting of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons on June 2, 2022, backed by the London Community Gospel Choir.

Porter, together with TSHA and Ellie Goulding, released the track “Somebody” on September 14, 2023.
