Gordon Lightfoot had three marriages during his lifetime. His first marriage was to a Swedish woman named Brita Ingegerd Olaisson in April 1963, with whom he had two children, Fred and Ingrid.
The marriage ended in 1973, partially due to Lightfoot’s infidelity, which he attributed to the challenges of fidelity in a long-distance relationship resulting from his music touring. Lightfoot’s song “If You Could Read My Mind” was written about his disintegrating marriage and was later performed with a slight change in lyrics, at the request of his daughter, Ingrid.
Between his first and second marriages, Lightfoot had two more children from other relationships: Gaylen McGee and Eric Lightfoot. In the early 1970s, Lightfoot had a tumultuous relationship with Cathy Smith, which inspired some of his songs, including “Sundown” and “Rainy Day People.” Smith later became infamous for her involvement in John Belushi’s death from a drug overdose.
In 1989, Lightfoot married Elizabeth Moon, and they had two children together, Miles and Meredith. After a separation of nine years, they divorced in 2011. Lightfoot’s third marriage was to Kim Hasse, which took place on December 19, 2014, at Rosedale United Church.
