As a journalist, Todd Matshikiza made significant contributions to the pioneering South African magazine Drum, where he played a role in its transformation to cater to a more critical readership. His jazz column, which focused on the vibrant township scene, provided insights into the music of artists like Kippie Moeketsi and Hugh Masekela.
His regular column, “With the Lid Off,” delved into the vibrant township life, offering readers a unique perspective. Matshikiza’s distinctive writing style, known as “Matshikese,” was marked by a creative and playful use of language, echoing the rhythms of the jazz he loved.
Todd Matshikiza’s passion for music extended beyond journalism.
