Kirby was recognized as a preseason All-American before the 2019 campaign by both Baseball America and Perfect Game. He was 8-2 with a 2.75 ERA in 14 starts, 107 strikeouts, and six walks in 88 13 innings, earning him the title of 2019 CAA Pitcher of the Year.
Kirby was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the 20th overall pick in the 2019 Major League Baseball draft, and he was regarded as one of the top prospects. He agreed to a $3.24 million contract with Seattle.
He was sent to the Class A Short Season Northwest League’s Everett AquaSox after signing, where he played the entire 2019 season.
