Chairman Huw Jenkins named Monk as player-manager in an acting capacity on February 4, 2014, after manager Michael Laudrup was fired.
Swansea defeated Cardiff City 3–0 in their South Wales derby on February 8th, the first game he managed. All three goals came in the second half of the game.
Monk’s Swansea made it to the Europa League round of 32, where they lost 3-1 on aggregate to Rafa Benítez’s Napoli team, having finished second in their Group A behind Valencia.
With one game remaining, Swansea managed to stave off relegation. On May 7, 2014, Monk signed a three-year contract to become Swansea City’s permanent manager, bringing an end to his playing career.
Swansea defeated Manchester United 2-1 on the road in the first game of the 2014–15 season, marking the team’s first-ever league victory at Old Trafford under Monk’s leadership.

On July 7, Monk brought in two new players for the team: Jonny Howson from Norwich City and Cyrus Christie from Derby County. He signed Britt Assombalonga from Nottingham Forest two days after bringing in Martin Braithwaite from Toulouse.
On July 12, 2017, he managed his first match at Albufeira, Portugal, a goalless draw with Oxford United. Subsequently, Monk acquired West Ham United’s Ashley Fletcher and Darren Randolph later that month.
Later on in the transfer window, Monk brought in Connor Roberts from Swansea City and Lewis Baker on loan from Chelsea. It was revealed on December 23, 2017, that Monk had departed the team. Three days later, Tony Pulis took over.
On March 4, 2018, Monk was named manager of Birmingham City, a Championship team. In 15 months, he became Birmingham’s fifth permanent manager after agreeing to a three-and-a-half-year contract.
After Steve Bruce left a few months earlier, Monk was named manager of Sheffield Wednesday on September 6, 2019. He agreed to a contract with no end date.
When Wednesday was scheduled to play Birmingham, which is currently led by his former assistant Pep Clotet, in November 2019, Monk refused to shake hands with Clotet after the game and made disparaging remarks about him in his pre-match press conference.
Later in the season, when the two managers squared off again in the rematch, Monk and Clotet seemed to put their issues behind them as they shook hands. Sheffield Wednesday, which was sitting second-last in the league, fired him on November 9, 2020.
On March 4, 2024, Monk accepted a contract extension with League One team Cambridge United that would keep him as head coach till the end of the 2025–2026 campaign.
