He rose to become one of the best players in the history of the team, setting the Division I school marks for single-game scoring, career scoring, and made three-pointers.
Mathews guided the Bisons to their first NCAA tournament appearance as a junior. He received first-team All-Atlantic Sun and Player of the Year honors as a senior. At the 2019 NIT, he also guided Lipscomb to a runner-up finish.
To help the Bisons advance to the tournament’s championship game, where Texas upset them, Mathews scored 44 and 34 points in the tournament’s quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. As a senior, Mathews averaged 20.8 points per game and finished his college career with 2,478 points total.
Mathews signed a two-way contract with the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association after going undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft (NBA). He was required to split his time between the Wizards and the NBA G League team, the Capital City Go-Go, per the conditions of the contract.
On October 23, 2019, Mathews made his NBA debut, coming off the bench with an assist against the Dallas Mavericks in a loss of 100-108. In a 123-105 victory over the Miami Heat on December 30, Mathews recorded a career-high 28 points along with four rebounds.
Mathews joined the Boston Celtics on September 28, 2021, but was released at the conclusion of training camp. He was taken off waivers by the Houston Rockets on October 18, and they later changed his contract to a two-way one with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
The Rockets revealed on December 18 that Mathews’ two-way contract had been changed to a conventional one.
