Freda was born on November 11, 1960, in Alamance County, North Carolina in the United States of America to the late Dr. Betty Lynch Bowman and James Fred Bowman.

First, she earned a Bachelor’s degree at Wake Forest University in 1982 and then proceeded to the Campbell University of Law where she graduated with a law degree in 1985.

 The Durban-based Attorney became the center of attention for her work as a legal practitioner on this particular sensitive case. One which has been narrated in a fictional true crime series The Staircase on HBO Max of the exact accounts of a murder trial of Michael Peterson. Kathleen, the wife of Michael Peterson, was found dead with bruises on her body under the staircase of their North Carolina home in 2001 after she discovered her husband is bisexual and confronted him about it. Black put in all her best with closing arguments and ended up winning the case with Michael pleading guilty to murdering his wife Kathleen Peterson.

Though the trial was a great accomplishment for her, she didn’t live for so long to tell her own story as she was found dead on her couch in July 2008. Freda was an alcohol addict and was suffering from hypertension. According to an autopsy report, the excessive intake of alcohol resulted in her end-stage liver illness which cut short her life at age 57.
