Fatima Sydow died at the age of 50 on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, after a three-year battle with soft tissue sarcoma.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Fatima Sydow, renowned culinary artist and beloved personality, who left an indelible mark on the culinary world,” said her family in a statement.
“Fatima, known for her exceptional culinary skills, infectious enthusiasm, and warm personality, passed away peacefully earlier today [Tuesday] at Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Cape Town after battling soft tissue sarcoma since 2020”
“She was surrounded by her immediate family. “As we bid farewell to a culinary visionary, let us remember Fatima for her enduring impact on the culinary world and the lives she touched with her warmth and expertise.
“May her legacy live on in the kitchens and hearts of those who continue to be inspired by her culinary artistry,” added the statement.
Sydow gained recognition and became well-known through her Facebook page, which she started in 2011. In 2015, she self-published her first cookbook, The Journey of Cape Malay Cooking with Fatima Sydow.
In March 2020, Sydow started her YouTube channel which has accumulated over 167,000 subscribers at the time of this writing.
In 2021, Sydow and her sister, Gadija, made their TV debut with their cooking show, Kaap, Kerrie & Koesisters on Via (DStv 147). The show ran for six seasons.
The show’s spin-off was the book Cape, Curry & Koesisters, published by NB Publishers in both English and Afrikaans. She released two more books; Fatima Sydow Cooks and Fatima Sydow, Cape Malay Cooking.
Following her demise, many have paid tribute to the bereaved family. Her publisher, Lindy Samery, said in a statement: “Fatima was more than an author; she became one of my good friends.
