Adams spent 22 years as an officer with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and the New York City Transit Police.
He has said that he was inspired to join in order to drive change from the inside and that his desire to serve stemmed from the abuse he experienced at the hands of the New York Police Department when he was younger. He studied at the New York City Police Academy, where in 1984 he placed second in his class.
Adams started considering a career in politics in the 1990s, eventually aiming to become the mayor of New York City. He discussed a political career with Mayor David Dinkins’ advisor, William Lynch Jr.

From 2006 to 2013, he represented Brooklyn’s 20th Senate district in the New York State Senate. Being the first African-American to hold the office, Adams was elected Brooklyn Borough President in November 2013 and then again in November 2017.
Adams made his announcement about running for mayor of New York City on November 17, 2020. The Associated Press (AP) announced on July 6, 2021, that Adams had won the Democratic primary for mayor of 2021.
Adams easily defeated Curtis Sliwa, a Republican, in the general election. Adams took office as mayor on January 1, 2022, just after midnight.
As mayor, he has reinstated a plain-clothes police squad that was abolished by the previous administration, taking what is perceived as a tough-on-crime stance.

The Adams administration paid $50,000 in 2023 to send a few migrants who had crossed the southern border between Mexico and the United States into other states and nations, including China.
In the years 2021 and 2022, they were relocated. The migrants wanted refuge on political grounds. A bill to toughen penalties for zoning infractions in New York was vetoed by Mayor Adams in 2023.
Adams contended that New York City was running out of space and resources to accommodate the flood of about 100,000 migrants from the southern border in July 2023, during the migrant housing crisis in New York City.
On June 23, 2023, Adams vetoed legislation that would have expanded the eligibility of homeless families and individuals for housing vouchers under the CityFHEPS program. Adams also used an executive order to carry out a portion of the legislation, which removed the 90-day waiting period for those who are currently in shelters.
On June 28, 2023, during a housing town hall, 84-year-old tenant advocate from Washington Heights and Holocaust survivor Jeanie Dubnau questioned Adams about the past two years of rent increases on rent-stabilized housing, which has been approved by a board he appointed. Dubnau accused Adams of being controlled by the real-estate lobby.
