Rachel Agatha Keen (born 24 October 1997) is an English singer and songwriter better known as Raye (stylized in all capitals). Raye rose to notoriety as a solo artist after composing and producing songs for other singers such as Beyoncé, Little Mix, Rihanna, David Guetta, John Legend, Ellie Goulding, and Jax Jones. She received a BMI Award in 2019 for her revolutionary talent, creative vision, and impact on the future of music.
Why did Raye leave the record label and become Independent?
Raye has stated that she is “excited” to create new songs “without boundaries” after leaving her record label amid allegations that she was barred from releasing an album.
In a June Twitter thread, the British singer-songwriter stated that she had signed a four-album deal with Polydor in 2014, but that she is “sick of being slept on” and is unable to release an album.
Raye and Polydor “parted ways” a few weeks later, leaving the performer a free agent.
Raye told Sky News on the red carpet of the GQ Awards this week that it had been “a lot to process.”
“I’m really looking forward to my next chapter.” I’m self-sufficient and liberated, and I’m about to express myself completely.
“I’m going to do a couple of features this year, process everything and come strong next year with my own music.”
“I think I was very bound to having to make one specific type of music – I’m a songwriter, I have so much to express, and I just want to do it all,” she says of her new songs.
“I’m lucky my family is amazing and the industry support was incredible,” she mentioned to Sky News.
“I was very, very blessed.”
Euphoric Sad Songs, a nine-track “mini-album” published by the artist last year, and she has five EPs dating back to 2014.
She headlined her own tour in 2018 and has opened for artists such as Jess Glynne, Halsey, and Khalid.
She was nominated for best British single at the Brit Awards earlier this year for her 2020 collaboration with Regard, Secrets, but was defeated by Harry Styles’ Watermelon Sugar.
