He rejected NFL offers from the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers in favor of a coaching position at Yale University.
He then attended Yale Law School and graduated in May 1941. He then enlisted in the United States Navy following the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. He applied for sea service and served for several years aboard the USS Monterey. He was honorably discharged in February 1946 and got several military awards.
