Tom Coughlin is an American former professional football coach and businessman, with a net worth of $16 million. Tom Coughlin earned $7 million as the head coach of the New York Giants. Coughlin founded the Jay Fund, officially the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation, in 1996 while coaching in Jacksonville, Florida. The fund is named after Jay McGillis, a Boston College athlete who was diagnosed and died of leukemia during Coughlin’s time as head coach.
According to the foundation’s mission statement, the non-profit organization is dedicated to aiding “children with leukemia and other cancers and their families by providing emotional and financial support to help reduce the stress associated with treatment and improve their quality of life”. As of early 2020, the fund had disbursed more than $13 million, benefiting over 5,000 families of children battling cancer.
Coughlin began coaching at the university level in the early 1970s, first at Rochester Institute of Technology, then Syracuse University, and eventually at Boston College. After two seasons at Boston College, he became the Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receivers coach. He later joined the Green Bay Packers, returned to Boston College, and was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995 to 2002.
Coughlin’s first five seasons with the Jaguars were very successful, with the team reaching the AFC Championship Game twice. He was selected as the NFL Coach of the Year in 1996. However, his subsequent seasons were far less outstanding, and he was eventually let go. He became head coach of the New York Giants in 2004 and had a number of ups and downs with the franchise. However, after taking over as coach, he led them to two Super Bowl championships, both of which were against the New England Patriots.
Following his tenure as the Giants’ head coach, Coughlin was hired as senior advisor to the NFL’s football operations department. And during halftime of a game between the Giants and the Bengals at Metlife Stadium in November 2016 Tom was inducted into the Giants’ Ring of Honor. He then returned to Jacksonville as executive vice president of football operations.
