Politico reported on January 10, 2021, that then-President Donald Trump planned to award Bill Belichick the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Belichick said he was flattered to be nominated for the award, but declined it in a statement the next day.
In light of the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, he expressed “great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom, and democracy” in his remarks. Following the announcement of the prize, some Massachusetts lawmakers, notably Senator Ed Markey and Representative Jim McGovern, urged him to decline.
Meanwhile, Belichick became the Giants’ defensive coordinator in 1985, and the team won the Super Bowl in 1987 and 1991. Belichick became head coach of the Cleveland Browns in 1991 and remained with the organization until 1995. In 1996, Belichick was hired by the New England Patriots as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach, and in 1997, he joined the New York Jets as interim head coach before becoming assistant head coach and defensive coordinator when Bill Parcells was named head coach. Parcells had planned for Belichick to take over in 1999, but the day after he was named head coach, Bill resigned during a press conference.
In 2000, he became head coach of the New England Patriots and also served as general manager. In 2007, Bill was fined $500,000 when a Patriots video aide was caught taping the New York Jets’ defensive signals in what became known as “Spygate.” The franchise was also fined $250,000, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stripped the Patriots of their first-round selection pick in the next year’s NFL selection. Belichick has won more games for the Patriots than any other coach in franchise history, including nine Super Bowl appearances in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2015, 2017, and 2019.
