The rock group Hootie & the Blowfish, which Rucker co-founded in 1986 at the University of South Carolina with Mark Bryan, Jim “Soni” Sonefeld, and Dean Felber, is best known for its lead vocals and rhythm guitar.

Following that were his seventh and eighth studio albums, When Was the Last Time (2017) and Carolyn’s Boy (2023).
Through benefit concerts, volunteer work, the World Golf Foundation’s The First Tee Program, and the Hootie & The Blowfish Foundation, which has raised nearly $4.5 million to support public education systems throughout South Carolina, Rucker has regularly collaborated with charities that support ill and impoverished children.
He has raised millions of dollars to support the construction of a new hospital and is a board member of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in Charleston, where his mother worked for more than thirty years beginning when Rucker was a young boy.
In 2008, he visited St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and pledged his support for it. Since then, Rucker has organized an annual fundraiser that has helped St. Jude’s generate more than $1.6 million in total.
