Christopher Pappas Siblings: Does Christopher Pappas have siblings?

Christopher Pappas has a sister. Her identity is not known.

Pappas hails from Mooi River and has a sister, but his journey into politics began during his university years. He attended Treverton Preparatory School and College before matriculating from Hilton College in 2009. His academic journey led him to the University of Pretoria, where he studied Town and Regional Planning.

It was during his university years that he was approached by the Congress of the People (COPE) to run for the student representative council (SRC), and he accepted the opportunity. Pappas not only ran but was also elected to the university’s SRC. At one point, he even assumed the role of temporary president of the student body. Following his graduation in 2013, he furthered his education by pursuing a Master of Public Administration in Local Government Management at Walden University.

Before venturing into politics, Pappas contributed his skills as a development economist at Urban-Econ. However, his entry into the Democratic Alliance marked a significant shift in his career. In 2014, he played a pivotal role as the party’s campaign manager for KwaZulu-Natal during the general election, showcasing his strategic prowess in politics.

Pappas’s political journey took a local turn when he was elected as the ward councillor for ward 31 in the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in 2016. During this time, he made headlines for candidly describing the city as “dirty and dangerous,” highlighting his commitment to transparency and accountability.

In May 2019, Pappas reached another milestone in his political career when he was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, becoming a DA Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL). He assumed the role of the DA’s spokesperson on agriculture, demonstrating his versatility in addressing critical policy areas.

Continuing his ascent within the Democratic Alliance, Pappas took on the role of the party’s spokesperson on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in January 2021, succeeding Mbali Ntuli. Later that year, on March 27, 2021, he secured a significant victory by being elected as the Deputy Provincial Leader of the Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal, defeating formidable opponents Hlengiwe Shozi and Samier Singh.

One of the pivotal moments in Pappas’s career came on September 11, 2021, when he was unveiled as the DA’s mayoral candidate for the uMngeni Local Municipality, setting the stage for the local government election in November 2021. His spirited campaign efforts led uMngeni to become the first DA majority municipality in KwaZulu-Natal, marking a historic achievement.

Following his election, Pappas faced a unique challenge. On November 12, 2021, during the inaugural council meeting, the suspended ANC municipal manager attempted to preside over the proceedings. The DA, however, objected to her involvement, deeming it illegal, and subsequently walked out of the meeting. Later that day, Pappas and fellow DA councillors were sworn in at the Howick Magistrate’s court. To resolve the issue, the Pietermaritzburg High Court ruled in favor of the DA, compelling the acting municipal manager to convene a council meeting. On November 22, 2021, Christopher Pappas was elected as mayor, marking a historic moment as the first DA mayor in KwaZulu-Natal and the first openly gay man to hold such a position in South Africa and across the African continent.

His inclusion on the TIME100 Next list underscores the potential and promise he holds for the future of his country.
