Coach David Quinn of BU teamed McAvoy with top defenseman and future fellow NHL player Matt Grzelcyk during the 2015–16 NCAA men’s ice hockey season. Grzelcyk was already chosen by the Boston Bruins as a third round 2012 NHL Entry Draft pick.

McAvoy competed for squad Canada in the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championship, where the squad won a gold medal. He also competed for the United States in the 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where the team won the bronze medal.
