Charles Stanley Wife: Was Charles Stanley Married?

Charles Stanley experienced a difficult chapter in his personal life when his wife of more than 40 years, Anna J. Stanley, filed for divorce on June 22, 1993, following their separation in the spring of 1992.

The couple agreed to seek a legal separation (“separate maintenance”) and pursue reconciliation rather than proceeding with the divorce. However, Anna filed for divorce again on March 20, 1995, and the legal proceedings continued.

The divorce caused some controversy in the Southern Baptist Convention and among Stanley’s followers. Reports emerged that he had previously stated he would resign as pastor if he became divorced.

At the time of their separation, Stanley expressed confidence that it would not result in divorce. However, when it did, he faced opposition from some members of his church who believed that he should step down as pastor.

Despite this opposition, the members of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Stanley had served as senior pastor for over two decades, ultimately voted to keep him in his position as pastor. According to the church’s bylaws, Stanley was permitted to remain in his role as long as he did not remarry.
