Additionally, he contributed to the triumph of the 2020 Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff National Championship as the co-defensive coordinator.

In his playing career, Charles Kelly was a notable presence in college football, showcasing his skills at Auburn from 1986 to 1989. Kelly embarked on his coaching journey as an assistant at Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama, from 1990 to 1992. His commitment to coaching continued as he took on the roles of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Eufaula High School in Eufaula, Alabama, from 2000 to 2001.

Kelly’s venture into college coaching began as a graduate assistant at Auburn University in 1993. His trajectory includes coaching positions at Jacksonville State University, Henderson State University, Nicholls State University, and Georgia Tech, where he contributed significantly to various aspects of the game. Notably, in 2010, he took on the role of interim defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, leading the team to a successful season.

In 2013, Kelly joined Florida State University as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator, contributing to the Seminoles’ victory in the national championship. He later served as the defensive coordinator at Florida State from 2014 to 2017.

Kelly continued his coaching journey, taking on roles at the University of Tennessee in 2018 as the special teams coordinator and safeties coach and subsequently moving to the University of Alabama in 2019 as the associate defensive coordinator and safeties coach.

On December 7th, 2022, he added a new chapter to his coaching career by accepting the position of defensive coordinator at the University of Colorado, working under the newly appointed head coach, Deion Sanders.
